So you want to excel as a wildlife photographer? These are the basics

Virtually every person who has made a name as a wildlife photographer shares an innate characteristic – an absolute love and passion for photography as an art and wildlife/nature as the subject. This is the ideal combination for anyone who would harbors the dream to make this a career. However, dreams and reality are two different things ideally because the former has to be actualized into the latter. The aspiring wildlife photographer has to grasp and master several basics to make the initial tottering steps a forerunner for future success. These basics don't come easy – energy, time, and discipline must be invested into the effort, and in the required measure.
The first consideration that a green wildlife photographer must sort out has to do with the equipment; to be more precise, the type of camera to use. Wildlife photography covers a broad spectrum whose subjects are sea/river/lake, terrestrial, and air animals. A wildlife photographer more or less finds a niche subject to pursue after being quite general initially. With this in mind it is prudent to start off with general shooting equipment – the standard 50mm and zoom lenses are pretty adequate at first. You can graduate to more particular lenses as time goes by.
Speaking of specialized lenses and equipment, the wildlife photographer has to ascertain what will serve his/her purpose in terms of producing the best quality of picture. Wildlife photography often requires shooting at distance and to produce close-ups at this distance one will be obligated to use a long lens. The 300mm lens will be suitable for a start. You would not want wild animals detecting your presence as you work; solve this problem by investing in a portable blind. Underwater work requires the photographer to have a specialized camera and equipment, bearing in mind aspects like depth and lighting etc. Luckily all the required information is readily available from many sources including the internet.
The working conditions for a wildlife photographer are as varied as the subject matter itself. The most important feature of these conditions is the weather. No one can control the weather and as such the photographer has to adapt to every alteration with speed because that defining shot can present itself at any moment. Seasoned wildlife photographers often carry multiple cameras and lenses so that they can easily adjust to weather changes that sometimes happen rapidly.
To make a career as a wildlife photographer you have to know where to sell your work. Stock photography firms are an ideal market though it is prudent to start with the lesser ones before graduating to the renowned ones. You can also sell your work to magazines, books, calendars, and newspapers.
