Dinner for Schmucks Lives Up to Its Comedic Appeal
With big names like Steve Carell and Paul Rudd come big expectations in the comedy department. This remake of the original film by Francis Veber "The Dinner Game", does deliver various laughable moments, but whether or not it does the original justice is to be debated.
Tim Conrad played by Paul Rudd, is a financial executive who impresses his boss in a deal that lands him an invitation to his monthly dinner event that involves the executives bringing an unconventional guest with a unique ability. Tim learns that the monthly event is actually more commonly known as a dinner for idiots, which offers bragging rights to the executive that brings along the highest level idiot. As quickly as Tim is energized by the invitation, his excitement is deflated not only by the discovery of what the dinner actually is, but also by his girlfriend Julie played by Stephanie Szostak, who refuses to let him attend.
Down and out, Tim has a chance meeting with a man via striking a Barry Speck played by Steve Carrell, with his car. Barry just so happens to be an employee of the IRS that spends his free time constructing taxidermy mouse dioramas. Unable to resist the enticement of the perfect candidate for the dinner for idiots that has fallen into his hands, Tim befriends Barry and asks him to join him in this event. Tim is not prepared for the frenzy of life changing events that Barry is about to bring to more than just the dinner table.
Upon an unannounced visit to Tim's apartment by Barry, his life is sent into a whirlwind. Barry mistakenly invites Darla in, who just so happened to hook up with Tim a few years back and began to stalk him ever since. This sets off a distressing series of events for Tim, including his girlfriend Julie believing that Tim is cheating and Tim believing that Julie is having relations with Keith Vollard played by Jermaine Clement, whom is an artist that Julie landed a curator deal for. After a wild series of events including chasing Julie to Vollard's ranch and a disastrous lunch, Barry ultimately agrees to still attend the dinner with Tim.
Feeling that his pathway to the idiot crown is crystal clear, Tim brings Barry along to the much anticipated dinner for idiots. With Barry, Tim should have learned by now to expect the unexpected and it just so happens that Barry's boss and foe Therman Murch, played by the hilarious Zach Galifianakis, is in attendance as well. Chaos ensues, including the revelation of the true intention of the dinner, and the guests reactions play out in a wild scene. As in many predictable comedic outcomes, Tim ends up getting the girl, Barry begins dating stalker Darla, and a new monthly event is created entitle the "breakfast for champions", where all the previous outcasts can unite. With a title such as Dinner for Schmucks, it is evident that the comedic dinner is the focal comedic climax of the film. While there are many entertaining moments, one may expect a stronger experience than a few chuckles, especially with so many proven comedic masterminds.
