The Victorian style bedroom has always been a dream come true. Exuding femininity, the Victorian era lasted more than 70 years, from the 1830s to 1900.
One of the main reasons for its popularity was its romanticism. The bedroom of the Victorian era was very romantic. The fabrics were frilly and lacy. The woods were dark and ornate and the room was filled with memories, collectibles and knick-knacks of friends, family and faraway places.
When decorating your room Victorian, you want to start with the furnishings. The bed should be made of cast iron or brass. If you were very Victorian, your beds would be twins, but there are queens and kings that are in the Victorian style. The bedding needs to be elaborate, with lots of flounces and trims. It's tough to go over the top in terms of ornate and elaborate when it comes to Victorian bedding.
The rest of the furniture should be highly turned wood, bamboo or wicker, which were all in favor at the time. The woods tended to be darker, such as maple, though oak works well too if you want to add a little "brightness" to the room. You can accent these with brass hardware and doilies on the top.
An armoire is an excellent choice, since they were used as a closet in many Victorian rooms. If you don't need the additional closet space, convert it into an entertainment center and bring a little of the modern world into the bedroom.
A large mirror is essential for the Victorian look. A floor length mirror in a corner is ideal, but you can also go with a makeup mirror above the dresser or a large mirror on the door.
The Victorian period loved the look of Oriental art and styles. Straw mats, hooked rugs or Oriental rugs made perfect floor coverings. The love of the Far East extends to wall coverings. Oriental tapestries were highly popular in the Victorian era and it's easy to find them on the market today.
If you want to create a totally authentic look, fill the tables with small pictures of children, flowers, animals and maidens. These should be either black and white or hand tinted. Color photos didn't exist in the era. Fresh flowers were also in vogue. Place them in Victorian-style vases. If you want to hit a home run, add a washbasin with a pitcher on the dresser.
