There are many species of plant which are commonly referred to as the clover. In scientific terms the genus is Trifolium which contains around three hundred and twenty species of clover.
When we talk about the rare four leaf clover, they are usually talking about a natural variation of Trifolium Repens which is considered to be a very lucky find. People often find a similar plant called Oxalis Deppei or Marsilea Quadrifolia. These are also known as Pepperwort and the Water Clover. Technically speaking these are clovers, but are not the species of clover thought to bring luck if someone finds a four leaf variant. The original and lucky four leaf clover is Trifolium Repens.
The meaning of the clover leafs.
We have found several interpretations of the meaning of clover leafs. The two main interpretations are:
Leaf 1 - Faith. Leaf 2 - Hope, Leaf 3 - Love, Leaf 4 LUCK
And the other is
Leaf 1 - Love, Leaf 2 - Health, Leaf 3- Glory, Leaf 4 - Fortune
As with all superstitions and folklore you can find a great diversity and variation in stories and peoples belief. What is interesting about the superstitions around the four leaf variation is that they are not only found in Ireland but also in other countries in Europe and farther away in The Middle East and Asia. The clover is considered lucky in most cultures where the clover plant can be found growing.
Shamrock is the Irish name for the clover plant which is a native plant to Ireland. The clover plant is a well recognized symbol for Ireland and its picture can be seen everywhere in Ireland. Clovers usually have only three leafs, but for reasons unknown they can very occasionally be found with four leafs or more. In fact people have found a clover with over twenty leafs, but this is an extremely rare find.
The four leaf clover occurs in around 1/10,000 of occurrences so it is very rare indeed. Some biologists speculate that the fourth leaf occurs due to a genetic defect, and others think that it is caused by environmental reasons.
One of the oldest legends of the four leaf clover goes back to the beginning of creation! Some people believe that Eve took one with her from The Garden of Eden to remind her of the paradise she had lost. Another popular tradition states that an unwed woman looking for a husband should find and then eat a four leaf clover. The next man she sees will be her future husband.
Recenty companies have set up lucky clover farms. These farms produce millions of clovers, and using high tech equipment and manpower they can find and extract the ones with four leafs and discard the ones with three leafs. They are made into four leaf clover jewelry, keyrings, and other types of lucky charms. People can often be seen on St Patricks Day wearing a four leaf clover necklace with pendant.
