Urbis – Celebrating Urban Art
Located in the heart of the busy Manchester City Centre, the Urbis Centre is an exciting new tourist attraction that showcases the aesthetics of urban life. The Urbis is a museum that is dedicated to celebrating the urban lifestyle, with a range on interactive exhibits and differently themed exhibitions and sections.
The architecture of the Urbis Centre keeps with its cutting edge urban image and signifies the rise of the museum, after the devastating IRA bomb in 1996. The building’s cool clean lines look stunning from all angles and the reflective glass gives the building an air of freshness among the usually drab Manchester skyline. The eye catching glass façade is made up of over 2,000 panes of glass, while the roof is made of copper tiles.
The five storied Urbis centre features an exhibition centre on each floor, usually the Urbis Centre has revolving exhibits with popular themes being popular culture, music, art, literature and urban life. Though many considered the Urbis Centre to be a huge drain on municipal funds at the outset, a few years after its establishment the centre drew in large numbers of visitors. Many were thrilled at the emergence of this brand of contemporary culture in Manchester and large crowds were seen in many Urbis exhibitions.
Among the five floors of the building the fourth floors is exclusively dedicated to celebrating the urban lifestyle of Manchester. Among the exhibitions that are scheduled to be held this year is “How Manga took over the world”, this focuses on the contemporary Manga art form and also features a couple of interactive activities. The Urban Gardening exhibition is also expected to be quite popular and will explain how city dwellers can make their lives “greener”. Fashion designer Matthew Williamson will present an exhibition on fashion themed “Ten years in fashion” the show will explore trends behind urban fashion and attempt to deconstruct the work of this Manchester born designer.
To enhance the Urbis experience for visitors the centre has recently opened up the chic and stylish “The Modern” which is a sleek and sophisticated restaurant and bar with excellent ambience. Being located in the heart of the city, it would also not be difficult for travelers to check into a Manchester hotel nearby.
