About Boleslawiec Polish Pottery

Zaklady Ceramiczne is one of the oldest and largest stoneware factories in Boleslawiec, Poland. Zaklady products are known world-wide for their beautiful hand-finish. Their style is uniquely their own and their products are well known for practicality. Many of their products, those from their Signature Collection, are crafted by a master artisan and are hand-signed. These artists earn the privilege of creating their own work from start to finish. Rich deposits of stoneware clay, called Kaolin, were found near the Bobr River basin, and as early as the 17th century, farmers were creating designs using carved potatoes. They were inspired by the color of the peacock feathers and their designs were original.

Today, the clay is trucked from the local quarries to the factory. Even so, they are not mass produced. Different pieces are made in different ways. The pieces are fired, then painted and decorated. Sponges are used today instead of potatoes. The pieces marked "Unikat" (which means unique) have a great deal of hand-painting done with brushes. Each piece is coated with a transparent glaze to keep it from wearing and so that food will not stick. After painting and signing, the pieces are put in a kiln and baked at temperature of 2,246 degrees Fahrenheit. This adds the durability and stability to the stoneware.

Since the process of making and painting the pottery is unique, no two pieces are exactly alike. There may be small variations of color, pattern or shape. Because this is true, you can mix or match your stoneware and know that the colors and patterns will blend.

When you take a close look at some of the patterns you marvel at the ingenuity that goes into the creation of a dish. First of course, is the idea, the tiny spark that the artist sees with her mind's eye. Next is putting the idea to paper. Nothing this important can be randomly done. The sponges are then cut to recreate the pattern and this is what the artist uses first on the stoneware. Then, perhaps, but not always a few brush strokes to finish up. Finally, the glazing is done, the firing is done which makes the stoneware strong and as useful as is it beautiful.

All of this stoneware is oven, microwave, dishwasher and freezer safe blending the Old World with the new. You should always allow the dishes to come to room temperature when going from the freezer or refrigerator to the oven. Your oven temperature should not be over 350 degrees. This stoneware does not contain cadmium or lead. They are not made simply for collecting but are durable and user friendly. One of the fun thing to do with stoneware dishes is to bake in them. For instance, if you bake a pudding or custard in a potbelly mug at 350 degrees, then top it with crumbled Oreos, it will be the best part of your meal. You can bake in any or all of this Boleslawiec stoneware and make delicious and tasty dishes and have fun serving them.
