Great-Aunt Bess was a wild card. In the 70s, when holiday gatherings meant hostesses unveiled their finest matching china, Bess' mismatched antique tea cups set a tone for family events as quirky as family itself.
Iridescent pink, green, white or blue... Streamlined or lacy... Silver or gold... Everyone's place setting was unique. Bess fearlessly set Japanese lusterware alongside English chintz... Transferware among hand-painted porcelain. And she was equally bold with her trust, encouraging us-- young and old-- to use and enjoy a collection more safely kept from fumbling fingers. As a child, I looked upon her table settings with the delight of a fairy tale. It was Oz's rainbow or the Hatter's tea party. And each year I waited eagerly to see just which cup and saucer would bring magic to my place.
Bess did have an unexpected sense of humor. This supposedly staid Victorian woman, with the primly-set lips and the purple-gray hair, once mused about wearing Mickey Mouse ears to run her bank errands. Would the teller try to carry on a sensible conversation? Feel her leg being pulled? Or assume this elderly lady was simply one tea-biscuit short of a box? Under Bess' button-up exterior lurked a soul that yearned for whimsy.
Now tea cups grace my own shelves and dining table, as a wink to my great-aunt. I mix luster and chintz with abandon, then sit back and watch as unaccustomed guests smile, relax, and feel a little special.
Of course, while following Bess' lead, I disrupt no social norms. Today, small surprises like mismatched china are a perfectly acceptable--even expected--part of romantic decorating. And those who know me, know my mint luster and rose-transferred beauties may be part of a happy tradition, but they're no daring tease. To equal Bess' settings, I'd have to make a much grander statement at the next family gathering...
I wonder if mouse ears come in pink.
