My Penchant For Sunday Afternoons In Johannesburg
Sunday afternoon in Johannesburg is truly one of my favourite times of the week and having lived in Johannesburg for the bulk of my existence I think it only fitting for me to share with you my ideal Sunday afternoon experience. I have endeavoured to cater for most tastes here, enjoy the read.
The best place to lunch at is 4th Avenue, Parkhurst. This is without a doubt one of the vibeiest dining hubs in town and, Sunday is when one steps out to lunch. Luckily this charismatic street has many eating establishments so there is no doubt you will find a table for lunch. The street is comfortable in both summer and winter, many restaurants have made provisions for cooler winter months however, the mild daytime temperatures will make for a comfortable al fresco dining experience. The general standards and service in the street is very high indeed and one won't be disappointed.
A wide variety of shops find themselves among the restaurants, from antiquities, designer home wares and clothing to art galleries, this street will not let the discerning shopper down. There's always something appealing to see. Parkhurst is near to Sandton and Johannesburg CBDs and is located in the older more prosperous suburbs of Johannesburg
Near to Parkhurst are the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens – the ideal place for a long and tranquil walk. The gardens occupy a space of impressive dimensions and offer a variety of landscapes including my favourite - the rose gardens. This is a terraced rose garden with an ornate system of fountains, pools and ducts spanning every level. The garden culminates at a large pool complete with fountain, jetting water some 10 metres high. On the eastern side of the gardens, Emmarentia Dam shares its edge with the botanicals and late afternoons are very pleasant and savourable. If you enjoy a good picnic I implore you take advantage. Walking is one thing one can and should do when visiting the gardens and the general rolling scenery on such a walk will prove that Johannesburg is truly among greenest cities in the world.
Nearby, on 143 Barry Hertzog Avenue, you will find Lapa Fo restaurant, here is a continental kitchen and pizza oven with the largest pizza menu in Johannesburg. Places with a such a large range of pizzas are very few and far between. The restaurant is owned by Percy, who has an interesting background. Having acquired his culinary skills in Sicily, he went on to London to assist in the opening of a pizza restaurant and then brought his skills back home to South Africa to open Lapa Fo. Fusion and innovation is evident in every dish and the menu is centred around a continental theme. If you enjoy a distinctive dining experience then look no further than Lapa Fo.
These suburbs are all conveniently located in the Northern central Johannesburg suburbs. From the Sandton hotels, expect a journey time of 10 to 20 minutes, once you have arrived, all these locations are situated within 5 minutes of each other. For an alternative to the large anonymous hotels, see Sandton accommodation options, all establishments are star-graded by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa and offer equal standards of accommodation with an added personal touch.
