The interesting art of enameling on metals could be traced back to the era of the 15th and 16th Russia, which was the perfect location as the regions of Orient and the West amalgamated so, art originated which was unique and exquisite. The peak period in the history of Russian art was highlighted by the development of Cloisonné technique that was related to the craft of overlaying of enamel. The Oriental or Eastern style of Cloisonné has fine wireworks or Filigree that separated each pocket and could be individually filled with bright colored natural vitreous enamel. While the Russian technique involved enamel layering on flat surfaces, while creating metal pockets for enamel to fill in. The process of layering and drying in alternate steps helps create the semi transparent look.
The Champleve technique is another innovative method of enamel inlay which is done by creating etching and scratching lines on the metal surface and later filling it with various colored liquid enamel which turns glossy when dry. All these three techniques were used by the Russian craftsmen to create brilliant enamel inlay work with translucent shine.
