Saturday Night Live Cuts Two Female Cast Members
For the last several years, "Saturday Night Live" has been criticized for not having enough female cast members. And now another shocking decision by producer Lorne Michaels will no doubt put the show at the center of the controversy once again.Several days ago, it was announced that SNL had hired two new female performers - Nasim Pedrad and Jenny Slate. With Kristen Wiig, Casey Wilson, Michaela Watkins, and Abby Elliott in the cast already, it looked as though finally the show would strike a more even balance between its male and female performers.
There haven't been this many female performers on the show since the late 90's. Well, now it appears as though nothing is really changing. Hot on the heels of this announcement came the news that SNL was also cutting two female performers as well – Casey Wilson and Michaela Watkins. Wilson has been with the show since 2007, while Watkins only joined as a featured player last year.As far as regular male cast members go, as of last season SNL had Will Forte, Bill Hader, Kenan Thompson, Andy Samberg, Darrell Hammond, Fred Armisen, Seth Meyers, and Jason Sudeikis. For regular female cast members, they had Kristen Wiig and Casey Wilson. Michael Watkins and Abby Elliott were featured performers each week.
Many people wondered why SNL seemed to refuse to add more women to the cast (especially considering the popular Amy Poehler's departure last season.) For the last several years, it seems as if SNL has been a "man show," forcing the few female cast members to perform frequently as many characters (I love Kristen Wiig but I can only assume they are working her to the bone.) It was promising news that SNL had decided to hire some new female blood, but equally discouraging to learn they are simply replacing the two outgoing female cast members.I was really surprised with this news. Casey Wilson wasn't spectacular but she still had her moments.
I can sort of understand the decision to axe her, but Michaela Watkins really surprises me. In the year that she had on the show, she displayed a knack for creating some great comedic skills and even played some signature recurring characters that were popular with the audience (like the movie review girl on Weekend Update). Having a signature character is one way to gain a long life with SNL, so between Watkins and Abby Elliott (who started the same time as Watkins) I would have guessed Elliott would go first. Elliott had no signature characters and in what little we saw of her, she was not really funny at all. She got almost no airtime, and it really surprises me they chose to keep her over the superior Watkins. Maybe they'll give Elliott a chance to branch out this season, but I'm really bummed Watkins had to go. Meanwhile, Elliott has been promoted to series retular, which brings the number of female regulars to a whopping TWO (the new girls will most likely be featured players for their first season - generally the norm for the show.)I'll admit that still watch SNL religiously.
I have it set on my Dish Network DVR, though the last ten years or so I watch mainly out of habit. It's simply a Saturday night staple, and it brings me back to the days when I was a kid and used to struggle to stay up late with my brothers so we could watch Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, and David Spade do their thing. Even if I am not home on a Saturday night, my DVR will record all new episodes of the show automatically and I can watch the next day (fastforwarding through the commercials, musical guest, and unfunny skits.) I guess at this point it's sort of a routine habit that I see no need to break. Now, I was too young to recall the "glory days " of SNL (Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, etc.) but I still think the 90's and early 2000's were pretty darn funny. And while the last six or seven years have been painfully unfunny, I will admit that the last two years it has been improving (anytime Justin Timberlake is hosting it's guaranteed to be epic, and Andy Samberg needs to stay on the show forever.)
I will probably always catch this show for as long as it stays on the air, because at this point, it's a little weird to imagine it not being on anymore. The nice thing about a sketch comedy is that you can change up the cast members often, and as long as you have consistently good writers on staff, the show can go on and on. I just think it's strange that the show does not seem to want to hire women. And also strange that the women they hire are not always that funny at all. It's New York - how hard can it be to find funny women comics? After all, their sister show "MadTV" never had any problem finding funny females. I think what it comes down to is that Lorne Michaels does not want to hire many women, and does so purposefully. There's really no other way to explain it. And considering the female talent that has come from the show in the last ten years (Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri, Rachel Dratch, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler to name a few), it would seem they have simply given up on trying to find the funniest females out there.Despite all this, I will still continue to watch. So maybe I'm a sucker for punishment.
