Sales encompasses far more than just relationships building to the effective execution of sales skills. The essence of selling begins within each individual. These 4 verbs have you take a different perspective and should help you increase sales.
Before I share with you these 4 words, envision a moment one of the best salespersons you have ever read about or personally knew. Some might say Zig Ziglar while others may identify with Neil Rackham. However, would the name Walt Disney ever enter your mind? Probably not because Disney is so often associated with creativity and innovation, people do not think of him as being a great salesperson.
Yet, when we look at Disney's accomplishments, he truly was a great salesperson. He saw the market first before he saw the product. By keeping his childhood passion and uniting it with his creative spirit, he sold imagination to the American public and then to the world. I realized the salesperson within Disney when I read this story, source unknown:
An eight-year-old boy approached an old man in front of a wishing well, looked up into his eyes, and asked: "I understand you are a very wise man. I'd like to know the secret of life."
The old man looked down at the youngster and replied: "I have thought about that a lot in my lifetime, and the secret can be summed up in four words.
- The first is to Think. Think about the values you wish to live your life by.
- The second is to Believe. Believe in yourself based on the thinking you have done about the values you are going to live your life by.
- The third is to Dream. Dream about the things that can be, based on your belief in yourself and the values you are going to live by.
- The last is to Dare. Dare to make your dreams become reality, based on your belief in yourself and your values."
And with that, Walter E. Disney said to the little boy, "Think, Believe, Dream, and Dare."
In sales you must truly think not only about your values, but about the market place and how you will behave in that environment. Thinking is also required when constructing your strategic sales action plan along with the marketing plan.
Believing in your ability to be successful in sales is also a must. If you do not believe in you, who will? By using your values as the beginning point, you create authenticity and trust.
Dreams or what adults prefer to call visioning keeps you focused on the future not on the rear view mirror of life. By being proactive instead of reactive, you can see possibilities of life instead of the limitations.
For many years, I have had this statement in my head "God hates a coward." This came from my Swedish grandmother who dared to travel to America as a teenager searching for work. Later she dared to return again with a husband and 4 children in tow to realize opportunities not found in Sweden. She dared to think, believe and dream.
Again in selling, you must dare on a daily basis from making cold calls to stretching your own abilities. As you look to increase sales, think about how these 4 verbs, think, believe, dream and dare can help you.
