Les Paul guitars are so synonymous with music that many people don't even know it's a man's name. Lester Polfuss was once the most famous guitar player in the world, and brought the idea of the solid body electric guitar to guitar company Gibson in the 1950s. Gibson rejected his idea at first, but soon wisely brought Lester (now Les Paul) on to help design what would become a music masterpiece.
Why do Les Paul guitars rock?
1. They've Changed Little in 50+ Years. Think about how much everything has changed in the last half century. Gibson has made a few tweaks to the Les Paul here and there: adding different pickups, changing the shape of the neck, etc. To the untrained eye, however, a 1950s Les Paul looks pretty much identical to a 2005 Les Paul. This creates a sense of continuity throughout generations of music makers.
2. They're Expensive. While this initially seems to belong in the "why do Les Pauls suck" category, hear me out. An expensive guitar is like a Rite of Passage. With the exception of bratty rich kids, most people that play a Les Paul have previously made a serious investment in their own playing ability. These guitars are the real deal, and often times that attracts real deal players.
3. Housewives in Utah Can Name Tunes Played on a Les Paul. Yeah, they may not know how many strings a guitar has, but put on "Sweet Child o Mine" and they "get it." The tone of these instruments does something to us, whether we're musically inclined or not.
4. New & Improved: Now With Robot Brains. If you're a casual observer you may not be aware that there's a guitar out there that tunes itself. Yep, all you do is dial a knob to what tuning you want, and strum the strings. The "Robot Guitar" tunes itself in a few seconds. Past guitars have had this functionality, but never on a consumer guitar.
5. The Smooth Curves Remind Us of the Hourglass Figure. One observer called the Les Paul "sex with strings." While sex often comes with strings attached, you get the point: this guitar is a work of art. Music can evoke emotions within us like few other things can, and the added visual beauty of this guitar only furthers this cause.
There are plenty more reasons why Les Paul guitars rock, and with more than fifty years as a Rock n' Roll Icon there will be plenty more to come.
