Many types of pottery have been born for this one (out of many) reasons - reproduction or, at least, the simulation of porcelain. When porcelain came to Europe through trade, many were enamored by its uniqueness and unmistakable characteristics. But porcelain could not be afforded by everybody and, thus, many potters experimented on creating wares that could be less costly substitutes for the real thing. One of the products of these endeavors is pearl ware pottery.
Contrary to some beliefs, it was not Josiah Wedgwood who invented pearl ware. (Note that the term used is "invented.") A type of pottery with the same pearly effect as Wedgwood's pearl pottery which was called "China Glaze" had been in production in Staffordshire potteries long before Wedgwood came up with what he called his "Pearl White." Due to this, it is also in doubt whether he indeed developed the technique of making pearl pottery. However, it is true that he popularized white earthenware with a bluish glaze that resembled porcelain - pearl pottery.
Wedgwood manufactured pearl ware pottery by adding china clay to his creamware to make it whiter aside from using soaprock and cobalt oxide (which is responsible for the bluish tint). It has been said that the reason for Wedgwood's innovation of his creamware was the comment of Lady Dartmouth - she was bored of the simplicity of creamware.
Wedgwood marketed his pearl ware pottery in 1779. It became very popular to other potters as well as to consumers because it could be decorated easily: whether by gilding, molding, piercing or painting. The formula for pearl ware pottery made pearl ware a very good base for paints.
Pearl pottery is made entirely by hand. It starts with throwing the clay on the potter's wheel and is followed by finishing the details on a lathe. After this, the handles and spouts are added.
Pearl pottery can be classified into two: enameled and painted. If a piece of pearl ware is painted before being glazed, the item is said to be "painted." On the other hand, if a piece of pearl pottery is painted after the glazing, then it is said to be "enameled."
Common examples of pearl pottery are bowls, plates, mugs, jugs, coffee pots and figurines. Many of these are painted in lively colors. The usual motifs used are birds, animals and human figures. During the 1780's pearl ware products showed an imitation of Chinese designs.
Collecting pearl ware pottery is a delight for collectors for one more reason: since pearl pottery is hand-painted, no two pieces are ever alike. So if you are in possession of one, you can be sure that there is none other like it.
