Nudity in Video Games - The Fine Line Gets a Little Finer
There was a time when nudity in video games was shocking. Most gamers remember the controversy that arose as a result of a sexual Easter egg called "Hot Coffee" - included in the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (no stranger to controversy). However, this 2005 controversy resulted in Rockstar Games suffering an Adults Only rating on their video game, helplessly watching it being pulled from many stores and posting quarterly losses of around $280 million according to their company financial statement that year. However, much like the quick progression of violence tolerance in video games, it would seem that the nudity taboo in video games has begun to fade away. We'll examine some key turning points on the subject to determine just how nudity is used in video games today to determine how it might be used in the future.
God of Controversy
When God of War was released on the PS2 in March of 2005 (pre-dating San Andreas), there were no secrets about a particular scene in the game where you interacting with a couple of nude women in order to, ahem, knock that vase off the table. Although the actual exploits of Kratos as he relaxed in his pad were not entirely shown, there were extended topless scenes that some claimed were unnecessary and inappropriate. Some conservatives have claimed to enjoy the game play, but still rated it as an F to warn parents about Greek themes, violence, and nudity.
However, God of War warned parents about the scene directly on the cover on the game. Although the women were given tops for the Japanese release, the scene was untouched for the American version. Beyond this, it seemed like there was little controversy about this scene. Instead, the focus was on the violence and thematic material. Why was this so? Why did a game with a secret scene that could only be accessed with some clever hacking get so much more attention than a game that just came right out with it? Well, Grand Theft Auto has always been an easy target. Since it first made its mark on the industry with Grand Theft Auto III, no one can argue that Grand Theft Auto has been the subject of many conservative gaming reviewers and one disbarred lawyer (Jack Thompson).
Video Games Based on Nudity
It's clear that, provided that a game company uses nudity in a relevant way, it is acceptable. God of War used nudity for a historical citation - nudity would have been an important part of Greek culture. However, there are examples of games that have used nudity to cash in on the video game bare body craze - and do little more. Take the banned game "The Guy Game" or the ancient tasteless game "Custer's Revenge" for the Atari. The Guy Game was banned because of a scene that contained a topless 17 year old girl (with fake breasts) while Custer's Revenge was a product of a time when anyone could make a video game for any console they wanted without legal trouble.
Then, of course, no video game nudity article would be complete without mentioning Playboy: The Mansion on the Playstation 2. Filling the shoes of Hefner himself, you attempt to build an adult empire. The reason that Playboy: The Mansion was accepted without a great deal of controversy was that no one would expect a game titled as such to contain anything less. In fact, it would be a bit of a disappointment wouldn't it? Imagine a game called Dolphin: Great Ocean Adventure where you ended up playing as a dog running around in the woods. It wouldn't make any sense. Parents who bought Playboy: The Mansion for their children expecting a Bible friendly action adventure would be complete morons.
Wrapping (Or Unwrapping) It All Up
The line between acceptable and unacceptable nudity in video games is drawn with clarity and significance. If it is obvious that nudity is important to a game or has some part in it (not used to simply boost sales among acne riddled teenagers), it will get a Mature rating but primarily stay out of the controversy whirlwinds (at least as far as the nudity alone is concerned). Now, if Hefner had celebrated his sexual conquest by joyriding around town and killing cops, we would have a big controversy on our hands. Video game companies can feel safe including relevant nudity in their games long in the future but they will have to deal with a stiffer rating.
The main issue seems to focus on the popularity of a video game. For example, Playboy: The Mansion was nowhere near as popular of a game as any Grand Theft Auto title. This brought more focus on the game because, presumably, the more copies there were in circulation, the greater the chance that such a game would end up in the hands of a minor.
Changing times have greatly influenced this trend as well. Today, minors can unfortunately access nudity far more explicit than any game has ever portrayed with a few clicks on a computer. This is a growing problem that should be addressed long before video game controversy is discussed. It is the responsibility of the parents to monitor their children's gaming activities to make sure they are safe and reflect the family values. As a parent, you should welcome the chance to spend some time with your child and become engaged in their activities to connect with them. You don't get to ignore your child's activities and then complain about companies that produce games with themes or materials that you deem inappropriate. It doesn't work that way.
Video game companies will continue to use nudity where they deem it appropriate. If it is true that video games art (they are), designers should feel free to use it where they deem it appropriate. Censoring such materials is beginning to slide down a slippery slope that may end in large black bars over paintings in museums and cute tops and speedos on marble statues. Do we really want to live in that society? Or, do we want to take the time to educate ourselves on the games we and our children play? You never know when questions like these will be very important.
