How To Play Pocket Pairs

It's always nice to wake up with a wired pair in the hole. However, when reading forums, sad tales can be found about players having their pocket aces bested by opponents starting off with hands such as J9 off suit. A lot of players therefore play them very conservatively because they have been burned so often. In my opinion, experience isn't always the best guide concerning this matter. Mathematical probabilities paint a very pretty picture for pocket pairs. The key is to raise aggressively pre flop with the hope of creating a heads up situation.

If you're holding a big pair and believe your opponent has been dealt a smaller one, you are a big favorite. On the other hand, when finding yourself with the lowest of it, your the big underdog. No real surprise there.
So when dealt pocket rockets, the right thing to do is to play them with the most aggression as possible. Raise immediately, and when you get re-raised, re-raise again to push out potential rivals and create that much wanted heads up situation. When done so, your big pair outranks a smaller one by a 4 to 1 advantage. Same goes for all bigger pairs like KK, QQ, JJ versus less.

When believing you're playing against an unpaired or unconnected hand. It's either a coin flip or you're a small favorite. Against two over cards (connected or not) your pair would definitely face a toss up. But with only one over card and a kicker that is equal to, or lower than the pair (for example Q5s vs 55) we would be quite a strong favorite.

Be aware of sticking to statistics though. As stated earlier, when thinking your opponent holds a bigger pair, your hand is totally worthless. Remember that pocket kings are as dominated against aces as a pair of deuces would be.

Also, overplaying a small pair is a bad idea. These do not play comfortably in a pre flop raised pot and a flop containing over cards. Hitting a set is probably needed or else a good read or power bluff is required to win the hand. Furthermore, in an all-in confrontation, a small pair is either a marginal favorite or totally dominated. So play them with the necessary caution and in the right position .

So what's the best way to play pocket pairs? This depends on how many opponents you're facing. Heads up you usually have the edge or at worst a small disadvantage versus anything other than a bigger pair. So try to reduce the number of opponents and add some intelligent bluff play. When the board is right for it your pair can be as big as you want it to be.
