Jewel's debut album, Pieces of You, reveals a special voice--strong and focused on both the whispery verses and the hooky choruses. The recording also exposes an unfortunate tendency to present trite, hackneyed sentiments as if they were oracular visions from a young prophet to a jaded world...

A far deeper, more enduring outing than his spectacular 1991 debut. Baking Programs in Portland, Oregon

Maybe you’ve always loved the smell of freshly baked cookies or just want to (finally) be able to master the art of the soufflé. If you see yourself in a career in baking, Portland, Oregon is a great spot to get trained and pursue a culinary career. Culinary schools and colleges abound in Portland, the center of Oregon’s cosmopolitan and artistic life.

Curriculums Vary

Students interested in baking can look to degree or certificate programs at many of Portland’s colleges. Ranging from eight-months to 1.5 years, the curriculum and focus of the different baking programs varies greatly. The best part about baking programs is that they offer hands-on curriculum, meaning you spend a lot of time in the kitchen while you’re learning.

Learn the Art

Colleges in Portland offer education in the following: basics of baking equipment, keeping a clean kitchen, baking formulas, setting up a baking product line, and more. Students leave school with fundamental baking skills and a strong theoretical background in the art.

Depending on the program’s length, Portland baking colleges can also guide students in advanced cake building and decoration. And of course, good baking programs should always be taught by experienced professionals with years of baking under their belt.

Follow Your Folly

A graduate of a baking program in Portland can look to a career working in restaurants, hotels, or clubs. In 2008 there were an estimated 1,500 baking jobs in Portland.

Those interested in working for themselves should consider starting their own bakery. In fact, a baking program can also train you in the business of baking, preparing you for things like managing personnel, working with suppliers and budgeting properly. When you own your own business the financial risk can be much greater, but the payback can also be much more rewarding.

Living in the Pacific Northwest

What’s great about getting a baking education in Portland, Oregon is that in addition to a good variety of colleges to choose from, Portland offers a wealth of artsy and outdoorsy activities. The Pacific Ocean is just 78 short miles away, and the beautiful Willamette River offers a scenic setting for boating activities. The Portland Museum of Art, along with gallery walks and the city’s famed Saturday Market provide plenty of fodder for the arts-minded, and foodies can revel in the bustling downtown restaurant scene. And the damp, rainy weather serves as a good impetus to get people inside, drinking coffee, listening to music, and eating baked goods.

The beautiful Pacific Northwest can be an ideal place to get a certificate, or even a second degree, in baking. Colleges in Portland, Oregon abound, and the arts and café scenes can’t be beat. If you’ve got a knack for creating tasty treats—and want to learn how—Portland can be a great place to get an education and pursue a career.
