Roundworms and Hookworms are internal parasites that feed off your cat in order for them to live and multiply. There are some creatures that live inside your cat without causing harm. However, some parasites, including Roundworms and Hookworms can cause adverse reactions in your cat.
Roundworms
Roundworms (also known as Toxascaris leonina and Toxocara cati) are the most common intestinal parasite of cats, with an estimated 25% to 75% of cats affected. The numbers are usually higher in kittens.
Roundworms usually infest adult cats, and while they're not always serious in adults, they can be responsible for a variety of harmful conditions in kittens. These can include anaemia, under-nourishment as well as lowering resistance to other infectious diseases. If the mother cat is infected, her milk contains the eggs of the worms which then develop in the stomach and bowels of the kitten.
Roundworms can include ascarids, hookworms and lungworms. Adult roundworms are 3 to 5 inches (7.5 - 12.5 cm) long and cream-colored. The adult female worm produces fertile eggs that are passed through the infected cat's faeces. The eggs require several days to several weeks to develop into the infective larva stage. Roundworms are passed by your cat coming into contact with the faeces of another infected cat or by eating prey that have been infected. The eggs are released into the faeces and occasionally can be seen in the stool. Many cats show no signs of ill health though heavy infestations can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss or death. If the infestation is large enough it can cause intestinal blockages.
It is important to treat queens shortly before or after mating to reduce the chances of having infected kittens. If infected kittens are not treated, they will be in serious danger.
They are many other intestinal parasitic infections that are much more dangerous to your cat's health than roundworms. It is necessary to do a microscopic exam of the stool to confirm the presence of parasitic eggs.
I do not recommend using over the counter medications to treat worms. Your vet will give you treatment specific for the type of worm your cat has.
Hookworms
Hookworms (Ancylostoma and Uncinaria) are less than 1/2 inch (1cm) long, slender, thread-like worms that attach to the lining of the cat's intestines Here they are able to feed off nutrient rich blood. Your kitten can be infected by the mother cat or they can become infected by ingesting the larvae from contaminated soil or water. They can also become infected by eating prey such as mice or birds that have been infected. Once in the host, the larvae migrate to the lungs and then to the intestines where they develop into adult worms. Because of their small size, they usually are not visible in the faeces of infected cats. They are long-lived and can live as long as the cat.
Hookworms can cause severe diarrhoea and even stunt the growth of kittens. Another symptom could be a lifeless or dry looking coat, lack of energy or appearing underweight. Anaemia is another symptom of hookworms and is most obvious on the nose or gums. You might notice that your cat's faeces looks black and tarry. This is because of the blood in it. If left untreated, your cat could die. It is relatively easy for your vet to diagnose hookworms and they can be easily treated. Keeping your cat's litter box clean with daily scooping and cleaning will help control hookworm.
Have your cat or kitten vaccinated for worms around six weeks and again at eight weeks as hookworms can be harmful to children's health. I would also recommend a booster shot at 12 months.
