If you will try to look for the history of majolica pottery, you will surely encounter the Italian word "maiolica," which is also a name for the variety made in Italy that inspired Victorian majolica. This can easily lead one to think that the craft started in Italy. Majolica pottery can be traced back to the Mesopotamian potters of the 11th century. Potters from Mesopotamia (now known as Iraq) eventually immigrated to Spain. Majolica gets its name from an island in Spain called Majorca where the style was even more defined. When crafts of this design where exported to Italy, it began to be called "maiolica."
What makes a piece of pottery majolica? Majolica pottery is defined by a technique that specially makes it as it is. Basically, soft and porous earthenware pieces are baked up to their biscuit stage in low temperature. When these pieces turn yellowish, they are covered with an opaque tin or lead enamel and dried. Upon drying, they are decorated and coated with metal oxide glazes and fired again. After this, a second coating of transparent glaze is applied.
What does majolica pottery look like? Majolica is known for its vibrant colors (like Cobalt Blue, rich green and gold), its lustrous glaze and its three-dimensional designs. It is decorated with a number of motifs such as flora and fauna, butterflies, shells, fish, fruits and vegetables. It is also sometimes decorated with mythological and classical figures like cupids, sphinxes, griffins and Roman columns.
Majolica pottery made its first appearance in England in 1851 at the London's Crystal Palace Exhibition as the work of English potter Herbert Minton (in cooperation with chemist Leon Arnoux for the glaze). It gradually gained much attention and appreciation in the country as well as overseas. Majolica pottery became a hit during the Victorian Era and graced many homes. It reflected the interest in the natural sciences (botany, zoology and entomology) that was prevalent during the time. Majolica was also more affordable - more affordable than porcelain - so that more people were able to have them in possession. Queen Victoria's patronage of majolica also helped make it popular.
When Minton introduced majolica pottery to the United States at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, Americans started manufacturing majolica wares as well.
During the 1860's, majolica pottery soon manifested Oriental-inspired designs like bamboo and by the end of the 19th century, majolica showed designs characteristic of Art Nouveau such as vines and calla lily. There are no limits when it comes to the designs for majolica.
Today, when people mention majolica, they are referring to Minton's craft most likely which is also called Victorian majolica. It remains to be a stand-out yet elegant type of pottery that can accentuate homes even in contemporary times.
