I know it is still February and you have just gotten over that Super Bowl Party. But now is a good time to improve on your casting technique. Yeah, it is embarrassing to be out on the beach surf casting and you think you are good but oops, sorry neighbor. But when your cast flies across the lines of the next fisherman down the beach, you could probably do with some practice and improvement. Here are a few tips that will improve your surf casting and hopefully help you catch more fish.
Get out your favorite rod and reel and drive down to your local high school football field. Stand on the touchdown line and pick a target directly in front of you on the 50 yard line. We start working on accuracy and then move on to distance. Tie a coast lock snap swivel to the end of your line and attach a 5 ounce pyramid sinker to the snap swivel. The extra 2 ounces will approximate the weight of your rig and bait.
Allow about 2 feet of line to dangle from your rod tip. If you are using a spinning reel, slip the line under your index finger, but not all the way back to the crease at your first joint. Be sure to flip the bail open. Stand with your rod pointed 180 degrees from the 50 yard line and your body at 90 degrees from the 50 yard line looking down the touchdown line. Your shoulder opposite the rod should be pointed directly at your target.
As you cast bring your rod tip up directly over your shoulder and release the line at the top of the arc or 90 degrees from the ground. As you bring your rod tip up to the vertical position, rotate your body around the foot that is nearest the 50 yard line. This allows you to use your body weight to assist the force of your arms casting. Release the line from your index finger as your rod tip reaches the vertical position or the top of its arc.
Your first few casts may not be the greatest, but continue to practice. Remember to swing the rod tip in a vertical arc directly over your shoulder. Also, remember to follow through on your cast. At the end of the cast your rod tip should be pointed directly at your target.
If you will practice this technique once a week from now until fishing season, you will look like a surf casting professional when you get to the beach. You will improve your accuracy and your distance surf casting.

About Us
Dan Bryant was born and raised near the coast of North Carolina. Until he went off to college he never lived more than 45 minutes from the beach. He fished and hunted the coastal areas of North Carolina as a youngster, spending his free time hunting for rabbit, squirrel, deer, duck and goose and fishing the coastal rivers, estuaries and beaches.
In the early 1970s Dan moved the mountains of Western North Carolina. At the same time he and his wife became enamored of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. They began making several trips a year to the Outer Banks to enjoy the surf, sand, the seafood, the fishing and the water fowl hunting.
For almost forty years Dan has fished the Outer Banks of North Carolina from Nags Head to Ocracoke Inlet. He has fished offshore trolling for big game fish, bottom fished and gone out on Party Boats. He has fished and gigged the sound for flounder and surf fished from Nags Head to Ocracoke for Red Drum and Blue Fish. Dan has caught almost every species of Atlantic fish prying the waters of the Outer Banks.
