Born into a French family on April 26, 1798, at Charenton, Seine-et-Oise, in the lle-de-France region, near Paris, Ferdinand Victor Eugene Delacroix or Eugene Delacroix went on to become a poignant representative of 'French Romanticism.' His father, Charles Delacroix, a minister of foreign affairs, died in 1805, followed by his mother, in 1814, leaving 16-year-old Eugene, an orphan. His early education was at Lycee-Louis-le-Grand, where he excelled in classics, claiming various awards for drawing. His serious pursuit, however, as a painter and lithographer, began only in 1815, under the guidance of French Painter, Pierre- Narcisse Guerin.
His initial works, "The Virgin of the Harvest (1819)," carried the shades of artist's 'Raphael style.' By the time, however, he had painted "The Virgin of the Sacred Heart (1821)," Delacroix appeared more confident of experimenting with his own style. His expressive use of brushstrokes approximated the works of Impressionists, and even modern artists such as Pablo Picasso. Inspired by the 'Venetian Renaissance,' Eugene's paintings had underlined the scheme of colors and movement, more than the clarity of outlines. Despite widespread opposition, the artist's undeterred involvement with his work, paved way for his excellence. He never stagnated as an artist and continued discovering and rediscovering himself.
In 1822, his first major artwork, "The Barque of Dante" was submitted to the esteemed Paris Salon exhibition. In this work, the artist mixed undiluted colors, which appeared a unified whole from a distance. The State subsequently acquired this piece. His magnum opus "The Massacre of Chios (1824)," firmed up his position among the leading, contemporary Romantic painters. Through this work, Delacroix expressed his sympathy for the sick, dying Greek civilians, who were about to be slaughtered by the Turks.
In 1825, he visited England along with his friend Bonington, and spent his summers there, getting himself acquainted with English literature. Delacroix relished his time spent in fabricating lithograph illustrations for Macbeth, Hamlet, and the heroes of Sir Walter Scott. Most of his 'European Romanticist' works reflected placid, emotional aloofness and were inspirations, drawn from historical or contemporary events and literature. "Death of Sardanapalus (1827-8)" is an ideal example here. Impressed with English painting style, Eugene painted here his only full-length portrait, "Portrait of Louis-Auguste Schwiter, (1826-30)." In 1830, he created a differential blend of 'Romanticism' and 'Neo-Classicism' through his best work, "Liberty Leading the People."
In 1832, Delacroix moved to Morocco, North Africa, to escape from the sophisticated French lifestyle and to be a part of a more primeval culture. More than a hundred paintings created here, reflected the life of the common masses in Morocco, thereby developing his newfound interest in 'Orientalism.' He had a difficult time trying to find Muslim female models, but he managed to paint "Women of Algiers in their Apartment (1834)," under the veil of secrecy. His passion for the alien became an inspiration for the artists of the 'Symbolist' movement.
In 1833, Delacroix had numerous commissions to decorate public buildings in Paris. Throughout 1833-1844, he continued working on these assignments, which involved decorating the King's Chamber in Palais Bourbon, library of Chambere de Deputes, and the Chambre des Paris, as well as, the Chapel of Holy Sacrament at Saint-Denis. In 1862, he played a part in forming Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, a group of French painters. With time, excessive work started taking its toll, and Delacroix's health kept worsening, until he was no longer able to work. He died peacefully on August 13, 1863, leaving behind a priceless legacy of works, which are truly exceptional in style and content.
