With Halloween fast approaching, I thought I would make something that would attract the trick-or-treaters. I knew we were going to be a lot of kids around. So I wanted to have something that would interest them and perhaps give them a little thrill. I thought that the bloody stump of a monster's hand would be something quite interesting to them.
I decided I would try to make an artificial hand. I took a rubber glove and I put plaster of Paris in it. When I finished it looked like a manikin's hand, and didn't look realistic at all. So I discarded it.
Here is what I did. I cut up strips of paper and mixed it with water and flour to make papier-mâché. I took that and I stuffed into another glove. It was difficult to get into the base of the fingers and so I had to keep pushing it and when I pushed it the finger got bigger and bigger. When I finished I had a very large hand that was lumpy and quite grotesque. I took an eyebrow pencil and I drew in fingernails, wrinkles, knuckles, and hair on the back of the hand. I then folded the glove over on itself and put some ketchup on the end
The hand was finished, and now it was really quite impressive and realistic. Although I did not plan on it, by the time Halloween came in two weeks, the hand had turned green with mold and had a terrible stench. I thought that this might add to the fun.
What I did then was I put on my black shirt and my mask, put the hand into a cake tin, and when the trick or treaters came to the house I went out the back door and came around behind the kids and asked them if they wanted a treat. Then I opened up the cake tin, and showed them the hand. The sight was bad but the smell was terrible. They all backed off.
Interestingly, by the end of the evening we had crowds of kids returning wanting to see the hand again. This became a memorable Halloween.
