Here are a few great ways to squeeze extra profits from items you'll be selling soon on eBay, in this case using postcards and ephemera as examples:
1. A vintage postcard I sold the other day for £102 (about $200) had more than ten people bidding against one another. One unsuccessful bidder asked for a copy of the card and offered to pay £20 (about $40). Because this person had bought something already on the day, I sent a free JPEG file of the view on CD. But I also offered that JPEG to other unsuccessful bidders, via a Buy It Now listing, lasting 3 days, and sold 5 copies at a fiver apiece! So there's the idea: don't think only original items are worth selling, or worth buying for that matter, because many people are quite happy with copies, as long as you're willing to provide them.
2. Ask yourself if an item might be copied in physical format, as another postcard, for example, or as a print or similar? If so you might have regular best sellers sitting there on your computer hard drive, ready to be printed when someone orders without having to stockpile ready printed copies of whatever you are selling. Reproduction prints and postcards are immensely popular sellers, on and off eBay, especially unusual designs ready-mounted or even framed, and sometimes hand coloured to create something really special. One of my daughters runs a sideline venture selling hand coloured prints from the public domain and does exceedingly well. The important thing is, she only ever works on her product once an order arrives. And because no two colourings are ever the same, she emphasises in her listing that the product winning buyers receive will be based on the one illustrated but will in fact be unique. For more ideas, go look at other firms selling prints and photographs outside of eBay, some original, others printed to order.
3. Send information to local editors and publishers to use in articles or illustrations but do not send the original items and do not send JPEGs or full text copies of the original items. Both will give editors the opportunity to publish your findings without rewarding you. Instead, send a letter about what you have, give just a few bits of information, give sample pictures on paper not as usable picture files. Be sure your items are in the public domain which is easy if you stick to items from the middle to late 1800s but you must still always check. In letters to editors include just enough information to whet the appetite and make the individual need to know more - for which he or she must pay you normal editorial and picture fees. Agree an amount in advance of sending your articles and pictures.
It doesn't matter that you can't write, you just have to send copies of your text and pictures which house writers and photographers can rework for you. Do not ever send originals unless you accompany those items and never let them out of your site or you may lose them forever. You'll find freelance writing fees for most UK and worldwide publications in Writers' and Artists' Yearbook published annually and available in all town and city reference libraries.
