Your Golden Retrievers ears and bottoms need cleaning for a good reason. We cover the reasons and then move on to how it's best done.
Starting with ears.
Golden ears need grooming in and out. Ear cleaning is one of the basics to keep your Golden dog healthy. Check and clean his ears at least once a week. If not cleaned regularly, he might have ear infections, mites and a black and disgusting discharge coming out of his ears. The fur covering the outer ear should be kept neat and trimmed using thinning shears. After trimming excess hairs, it's time to clean the inner ear. Dogs don't need human cotton buds. This can push the dirt deeper inside the ear. For this task you will need cotton balls or clean cloth and some ear cleansing solution. ï,· Place a few drops of the solution in the ear and gently massage to loosen dirt and wax. ï,· Rub inside the ear flap and as far as you can reach without nudging the inner ear using moistened cotton wool. ï,· Never attempt using cotton buds to get inside his inner ear. ï,· Using tweezers, pluck the hairs growing inside his ear canals every two weeks so the canal can dry properly and prevent bacteria and fungal infection.
Your Golden Retrievers' ears should be pink on the inside with no foul odor or discharge. If you noticed redness, swelling, ear scratching, foul discharge and frequent head shaking, have him checked by the veterinarian.
From Head to Rear End Golden Retrievers, especially the males are obsessive territorial markers. Their scent glands located near the anus expels a very strong and foul smelling liquid which they use to mark their spot or when your dog potties. This area may get dirty if not cleaned and will contribute a lot to your dogs' stinky odor. This is the reason why professional groomers do not take the rear for granted to maintain a good smelling dog. You can do this at home using a warm moistened cloth. ï,· Lift your Golden Retrievers' tail and hold the cloth against his anus. ï,· Place your three fingers at an angle and gently press inward to force out the bad smelling liquid. ï,· Do this every three weeks.
If you fail to clean the rear end, you will be disgusted with the smell. Your dog will also chew and lick his behind obsessively. It would be really disgusting to see him drag his rear along your carpet or worse, on your sofa, so better clean this gland up and keep the itching, scratching and odor away.
