If you are just starting out collecting majolica pottery there are a few things to keep in mind. It is best to acquire the highest quality pieces that you can in your price range. You may choose smaller or more common pieces in order to afford those in better condition.
Decide what type of Majolica to Collect
You may want to collect a certain style exclusively or a certain form exclusively. For example you could collect jugs of many different styles and eras or you could collect only Etruscan Majolica pieces of. Remember that the older a piece is, the more likely it is to have some quality issues, but it is still better to choose an authentic piece with some damage than a remake in perfect condition. Because of the nature of ceramic antiques there are more chipped and cracked Majolica pieces out there than there are pieces in excellent condition.
Majolica Pottery Condition and Value
Cracks and chips are common in majolica, especially older pieces, due to the nature of these ceramics. Perhaps 70 percent or more of antique majolica does have a condition issue, but because of this the market is somewhat forgiving. Crazing, or a fine cracking of the glaze surface is very common, and not a major quality concern. In fact, it is often a sign of authenticity as newer reproductions usually have much less crazing due to their younger age.
In addition to less crazing and damage, reproductions will usually be much cleaner and brighter than older antiques simply because they haven't had the time to age. Over time, the hard glazed surfaces will become more porous and can absorb dirt that gives the white and lighter colored glazes a greyer appearance. Glazes colors also may fade over time. These signs of aging give authentic majolica a worn but well loved look.
Aging is often most apparent on the bottoms of the pieces where they rest on surfaces and on the more fragile top rims of pieces. When selecting a piece to buy for a collection, if you are interested on a return in value it is important to look for these signs of authenticity. Though beautiful, reproductions have little return on value.
Where to Collect Majolica
There are many venues available to buy majolica. The first place to look is at a reputable local antique shop or dealer. They will often have a lot of basic information for you and be able to offer guidance on specific styles and pieces. Antique shows are another good source of information with many experts attending and willing to chat. Check your local newspaper for events.
The internet and eBay is a great place to buy and sell majolica. Auctions are also a great place for majolica collectors. There are even decorative art auctions that offer only majolica which can be found online. When buying online be sure that you do your research and become well informed before purchasing.
Collecting majolica can be a fun and rewarding hobby. Remember to acquire pieces in the best condition that you can afford even if that means buying a smaller or more common piece. But bear in mind that condition issues are common and somewhat forgiven in the market so don't get discouraged if pieces in excellent condition are hard to come by. Visit local antique shops, shows, and auctions or hop online to get familiar with antique majolica. Then decide what majolica styles, forms, and colors appeal to you most, select some pieces, and enjoy!
