Tough love is one of the hardest things to implement because it generally leaves our conscience asking questions of whether we are exhibiting this method of love for the recipient or for other reasons. It is a necessary act that constantly needs to justify itself and most times we cannot wait for it to end to show the recipient that we truly care even though our actions were for their benefit. Below are some of the reasons for tough love that appease our conscience.
1. What happens without tough love
Loving some one is not just about giving them what they want or being loyal to their needs. Loving someone is also being able to correct them and tell them the truth. We should not go out of our way to hurt each other but without this form of affection real love cannot exist. If we lie to one another and stop ourselves from correcting each other for all the right reasons as we see it then we are bringing disaster to our doors. Eventually when the truth is revealed as is always the case it will be harder to accept. Without tough love all relationships are based on a weak and pretentious foundation that is waiting to crumble under any amount of pressure.
2. End justifies the means
Implementing tough love is about having faith in the end result. This is not about the beginning but mainly about the end result. This is one case where the end should always justify the means. It cannot be implemented unless we realize that without it there could be no change and no results. If we really wish to make the difference in each others lives then we must implement tough love at certain times.
3. Perspective of love
Love is generally blind and can lead to disaster if it is not checked time and again to ensure that the blindness is righteous. Our love for God can be blind because it is a righteous love that could never lead us into trouble. Our love for each other can also be blind as long as it does not hurt us or anyone else. However God is all good and there is no wrong in God which means that when we love God the only outcome that could exist is a righteous one. Human beings on the other hand are imperfect. For this reason if we love each other blindly there are going to be times when we would be led down a path of evil. It is at these times when tough love is necessary. Whether it is in the smallest of things that is wrong we need perspective or it could eventually grow into something much worse.
4. Who we are
Tough love is another way of also letting us learn about each other. If we lie to one another then we would never get to know our true selves. Tough love is character building and can lead to a whole and complete love when the recipient and the giver overcome the first obstacles of it. It generally leads to a greater understanding between the recipient and the giver and most times strengthens their relationship.
5. Growth and development
Tough love is another means of growing in wisdom and better understanding. The recipient learns from the giver and the giver in turn learns from the recipient. Every time we are implementing tough love for all the right reasons we are also teaching ourselves something new. We learn our limits, our strengths, our emotional capabilities of endurance and take on a level of maturity and seniority. We become parent with the need to see improvement in another individual or a situation. The recipient also learns about us, learns to control their emotions and learns to get past the obstacles of blind love. The recipient learns that we would do what it takes to make things better even at the cost of losing them. They learn about our integrity and true character.
