One of the most confusing parts of greyhound handicapping, even with a good system, is how to actually bet what you pick. Depending on the method that you use to handicap, there are always more possibilities than the sensible bettor would want to bet on one race.
Whether you handicap by picking the best-looking dogs, or by eliminating the worst-looking dogs like I do, the only way to make money is by betting your picks. But what's the best way to bet them?
Well, if you use a system that picks dogs by eliminating them like I do, I suggest 4-dog quiniela boxes. That way, you have a better chance of covering all the dogs that you like without spending more than $12 on a race.
Of course, that's assuming that you can handicap well enough to get down to four dogs that you really think have the best chance of being in the quiniela. If you can't do that - even with a good handicapping system - then it's time to practice on paper some more before you put your money down for real.
If you pick dogs by looking for the best dogs, then it might be that a trifecta bet is best for you. It might even be possible, depending on how good you are at picking the top dog in a race, that a wheel or key bet is best for you.
I'm usually not good at picking one standout dog in a race, although I've been known to pick a few longshots with my favorite system. So keying and wheeling don't work as well as boxes for me.
However, that doesn't mean that I don't think they're good bets if you're the type of bettor who can find that one dog to key on with a good chance of being right. If that's your style, go for it.
If you're more like me - good at narrowing it down to 4 dogs or less - then try the 4-dog box for bets. And increase your odds by being very selective about the races you bet on.
No one can bet every race and make money at the dog track. You'll find that the most successful bettors are the ones who know what their strengths are when it comes to picking dogs.
If you're good at picking a key dog, then bet keys and wheels.If you're good at narrowing the quiniela down to four dogs, play quiniela boxes. And no matter how you bet, never bet more than you can afford to lose.
