Superflat is the Japanese postmodern art movement. It was founded by Takashi Murakami. This very contemporary style is reportedly influenced by Manga, the Japanese comic strips and also by Anime, original Japanese animation. While magna dates back to few centuries, Anime is a much younger innovation of WWII era. Anime thrive around 1960s. Thus it took its time in influencing the other forms of crafts like painting.
Murakami brought the style in public with naming his 2001 exhibition the same. The exhibition traveled around West Hollywood, Minneapolis and Seattle.
Superflat refers to different flat forms in Japanese animation, graphic art fine arts and pop culture. The movement also claims that it represents the Japanese consumer culture and its superficial barrenness. Critiques say that this self-proclaimed movement was a thriving marketing of a branded art event targeted towards to Western audiences.
Exponents of Superflat school, other than Murakami, are as follows:
1. Chiho Aoshima,
2. Mahomi Kunikata,
3. Sayuri Michima,
4. Yoshitomo Nara,
5. Tatsuyuki Tanaka, and
6. Aya Takano.
Moreover, some of the animators of Anime and some of Mangaka are also considered Superflat, viz., Koji Morimoto and most of the products of his studio Studio 4C), and the works of Hitoshi Tomizawa.
Superstroke is also a post Modern Art movement. It was originated in South Africa as a reaction to Superflat. It is the most influential movement in African regarding modernism and abstraction. Superstroke entails characteristic super expressive brush stroke. It is a quite modern phenomenon.
Superstroke manifesto was written by Conrad Bo from South Africa in 2008, this literature demarcates the pros and cons of various forms and method of depicting them in this movement. This also puts importance on photography. It also claims importance of expressionism over photo-realism. Yet it allows drawing abstract and figurative. Finally the manifesto declines the concept of "art for the sake of art". Instead it emphasizes on paintings with texture, and excessive brush or pencil strokes.
Superstroke varies from realism and abstract, monochrome and full color. Media in this school are various, viz., plaster of paris, charcoal and collage. Paintings of this styles Superstroke have characteristic frequent use of mathematical signs such as plus, minus, and equal signs.
