Needlepoint kits are not all the same. Comparing the kits you find in a 'big box' craft store versus an independent needlepoint store will tell you that in an instant. The price varies enormously. Why is that?
It comes down to the fundamental laws of economics. The kits you find in a chain store will be mass produced items that cost less to make. The kit manufacturers may have commissioned them from countries where labor is cheaper. Because they are sold in major chain stores they produce a much larger volume of each design and can therefore sell each one for substantially less.
In most cases the contents of a cheaper kit will not be of the same quality as a more expensive 'model' - no name brand threads and mostly they are kitted with cotton fibers or acrylic yarns rather than wool. Is there anything wrong with these kits? Not at all. You will get less choice in design than if you were to look further afield - the chain stores tend to carry traditional designs that appeal to a wide audience. If you look to independent stores, or on the internet, you will find a wide variety of needlepoint designs ranging from contemporary to medieval tapestry-inspired offerings. A lot more choice and a higher quality of fiber inside the bag. The designer has been free to kit with whatever he or she believes will present the finished product in the best light, and has not been limited as much by price. And when you look at the price tag on some of these kits, it shows! You have to think of it as a project you are going to spend hours and hours doing, and so the price per-hour-of-entertainment then becomes remarkably low.
Needlepoint kits that are found in independent stores and websites tend to originate in countries like England, Australia, New Zealand and France; places where the cost of labor is high. They are produced in small quantities by artists with a passion for needlepoint design. Some of these needlepoint kits have been around for years because they are so well-designed and people keep buying them. They become 'classics'. You will pay two or three times as much for a kit like this but you are unlikely to ever come across it on someone else's sofa. You will be handling natural fibers with a lot of color choices - the cheaper kits tend to have fewer color changes to keep costs down. This does make some of the more sophisticated needlepoint kits harder to stitch as there will be more color changes and shading decisions to make. If you are a beginner, look for a kit with larger blocks of color .
What about handpainted needlepoint canvases? These are considered the ultimate within the industry. The Ferrari of needlepoint! Each handpainted needlepoint canvas has been painstakingly painted by hand, one stitch at a time. There should be no confusion as to what color to place where as most handpainted canvases have been 'stitch painted' which means someone has painted each crossbar of the canvas mesh a specific color. Need I tell you why these handpainted canvases might be expensive? There are literally thousands of these designs available so you can almost always find something that inspires you. Think of handpainted canvases like custom pieces of art.
If you are buying a needlepoint kit, take a look inside the bag and check that the fibers look like something you want to spend a few weeks or months handling while you stitch the project. Remember, needlepoint is a relaxation hobby and it is all about the senses. You should get pleasure from handling all elements of the project, and acrylic wool might not do that for you. Also, check to see that the design has been printed straight on the canvas. Sometimes the printing process can go awry and if the design is not straight on the canvas you will have a hard time stitching it. Other than that, find a design you love at a price you are willing to pay and enjoy.
