Shaped Canvas - The Concept and History
Conventionally, most of painting canvasses are rectangular and are used with landscape or portrait orientation. By the 1930s, apart from the styles of painting, the artists began experimenting with the shapes and forms of the canvas bases. All this started in 1934-35 when Abraham Joel Tobias (born, 1913) exhibited his pioneering body of works, known as 'Sculptural Paintings.' The paintings were executed on canvasses of different shapes and sizes, mounted on complex design frames to achieve desired results. However, shaped canvas painting has ancient roots, extending back up to the Gothic and Renaissance Periods. Gothic and Renaissance pieces often carried tapering tops. Renaissance Painters like Raphael used 'Tondo' or circular canvas for painting religious themes, mostly those featuring Madonna. Baroque and Rococo painters often employed oval-shapes canvasses for their ornate paintings.
The Details
Shaped canvas painting may take two forms - one, where the two dimensional canvas is cut in a particular shape or the other, where the canvas is modified into a three-dimensional base. A three-dimensional canvas is obtained by adding some material or otherwise altering it. The two forms of shaped canvasses can be combined to create innovative designs fit for elaborate work.
The Artists and the Artworks
Frank Stella (born, May 1936) is one of the most prominent names linked to the art of shaped canvas. He experimented with various structures, like N, L, U, or T-shapes, and design materials. His famous 'Irregular Polygons' series of 1966-67, the 'Protractor' series of 1967-71, and the 'Polish Village' series of 1971-73, became landmarks in the field of shaped canvasses. American artist Elizabeth Murray (1940-2007) was another lead figure, known for her shaped canvasses made out of household objects set in bright animation colors. Her 2005 work, 'The Sun and the Moon' is a bright well-crafted work that embodies the zest for life, which Murray carried during her final days. 'Southern California' (1976), 'Painter's Progress' (1981), 'Wonderful World' (1988), 'True Air' (1988), 'Bop' (2002-03), and 'Untitled' (2006) are some of the other famous works by Elizabeth Murray.
Renowned American Color Field painter Barnett Newman (1905-1970) was associated with shaped canvas painting in the later half of his career. His famous Color Field 'Chartres,' dated 1969, was a shaped canvas with a triangular cut. An evenly lit work, it consists of broad vertical stripes in red and yellow, with black borders. Other artists, who worked with shaped canvasses, included Kenneth Noland (born, April 1924), Paul Mogenson (born 1941), Ellsworth Kelly (born, May 1923), Robert Mangold (born, October 1937), Ronald Davis (born, 1937), Richard Tuttle (born, July 1941), Gary Stephan (born 1942), Neil Williams (1934-88), Clark Murray (born, 1938), John Levee (born, 1924), Al Loving, and David Novros (born 1941).
