Literally translated, pate-sur-pate is French for "paste on paste." This describes the way by which pate-sur-pate pottery is done: porcelain is decorated with reliefs built up through several layers of liquid clay called slip applied using a brush on an unfired and unglazed body. Each layer is carefully painted and dried before being painted another layer. pate-sur-pate pottery is considered to be one of the most beautiful ceramic inventions of the 19th century.

History has it that that the pate-sur-pate technique was known in China during the 18th century. During the 1850's, French potters at the Manufacture Nationale de Sevres were inspired by decorations on a Chinese vase and made experiments in the intention of reproducing it. However, their endeavors yielded a different result with which a different type of pottery was born. During the 1870's, a talented artist by the name of Marc-Louis Solon was discovered by an art director at Sevres. Solon picked up on that, applied it to parian and perfected its technique to produce what is now known as pate-sur-pate. During the time that he worked for Sevres, he also crafted wares under the name, Miles, which can be seen marked through the initials "MLS" marked on them.

Shortly, however, Solon had to seek refuge in England because of the Franco-Prussian War. Upon arriving at England, Solon's skill as an artist and designer got him into contact with Colin Minton Campbell of Mintons Ltd., Stoke-on-Trent. Soon there was an increasing demand for pate-sur-pate and Solon was given English apprentices. Several other English potteries tried to reproduce the same kind of pottery only to be consistently surpassed by the quality of the Minton wares. pate-sur-pate continued to be in fashion until the early 20th century which was also the time up to which pate-sur-pate's golden age lasted. After this, Mintons became interested in other kinds of wares and the production of pate-sur-pate pottery decreased. In addition to this, Solon's son, Leon, became more interested in Art Nouveau. Upon Solon's death in 1913 and the beginning of World War I in 1914, pate-sur-pate finally lost its popularity.

For the years to follow, Mintons continued to produce pate-sur-pate, albeit, in small numbers. The production of it became difficult because of the lack of capable artists for the craft - many of Solon's apprentices had passed away. However, in 1992, one of them - Alboin Birks - revived pate-sur-pate pottery using devices for making the production faster and cheaper. There are those who claim Birks' work to be superior than that of Solon. However, Solon's crafts are still considered to be the standard when it comes to pate-sur-pate.

Later, French potter Taxile Doat brought pate-sur-pate pottery to America. It was then produced in Missouri and Ohio.

Some examples of pate-sur-pate pottery are plaques and vases decorated with cherubs and maidens.
