I don't know how many bottles of wine that have been opened in my lifetime, but I can remember most of the corkscrews I have used. Most were arkward and awful to use, many just didn't work and some positively dangerous to you health. There has just been one or two that have made the grade to path the way to a glass of wine and one that stands out for the rest. In my view the best corkscrew in the world - The Waiters' Corkscrew or sometimes known as the The Butler's Corkscrew.
No more hassle, no more split corks and no more looking like the village idiot in front of guests, even if you are on your second bottle and a little tipsy.
The Wine Waiter's' Friend or the Butler's Friend Corkscrew. What's more these corkscrews are cheap having been mass produced in their millions over the last couple of decades. You can of course now get gold plated diamond studded versions, but the basic design will work perfectly whether you pay one pound or one thousand pounds. (The average price for a decent one is around a fiver.)

Instructions for the Wine Waiter's Corkscrew:
* Place the wine bottle on a smooth, non-slip surface
* Cut the foil with the Waiter's corkscrews foil cutter
* Insert the the metal spiral into the cork centre or slightly off centre the twist the corkscrew until the worm is completely inserted into the cork
* Place the lever on the lip of the wine bottle
* Pull the corkscrew straight up. The body of the corkscrew should be at slanted angle once the worm is inserted into the cork
* Using the palm of your hand pull the corkscrew straight up toward the ceiling
* Once you notice the corkscrew beginning to bend stop lifting. The cork will still be wedged in the bottle
* Remove the remaining cork by hand by wrapping your hand around the cork to wriggle it out
