According to recent estimates the city of Bangkok has a population of approximately 15 million
people. The metropolitan area is divided into a city landscape that is a virtual potpourri. It includes parts of five adjacent provinces. They are Nonthabar, Panthurn Thani, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon and Nakhon Pathon.
Within this urban melange are groups of people that consist of Thai, Indian, Chinese and people from a variety of western countries. Many long time residents claim that this unique blend of urban city dwellers provide the metropolitan area with a unique character that is like no other.
Critics however, claim that Bangkok's tremendous growth has created a whole host of urban problems that could have been managed otherwise. Traffic and pollution are now a daily nemesis.
To its credit, the city's large urban sprawl provide both resident and tourist with a unique opportunity to experience sights, smells and tastes that could never be experienced elsewhere. Magnificent cuisine, fascinating history and vibrant nightlife have created a unique urban culture that is truly all its own.
For people interested in the city's historical evolution it is interesting to discover that Bangkok was not established until 1768. Prior to this time, it served as a small trading post during the Ayutthaya Kingdom. The capital center shifted to what is now modern day Bangkok after the destruction of Ayutthaya, the former capital now situated in Ayutthaya Province. In 1782, the Thai capital was moved across the Chao Phraya River after it was razed by the Burmese during a horrific invasion. Since that time, Bangkok has served as the political center of the legendary Rattanokosin Kingdom.
