Posters have an interesting history and are a big contributor to the effort to spread art and communication to the masses. They've also been around in one form or another since the days of William Shakespeare, when posters of a certain type were hand drawn and put up all about town to advertise the latest play by Shakespeare. Since then, their history has only gotten more interesting.
The standard definition of a poster is something that has evolved over the decades that is basically a piece of paper that is meant to be glued or otherwise affixed to any wall or surface that is vertical. Usually, the typical poster will contain not only graphics but also text of some kind. They can be seen as an advertising mechanism or a way to spread propaganda or any sort of message.
Posters are also a unique form of art, and have been deliberately designed in many cases to appeal not only to the eye but also to the thought processes because of the way they convey their context and messages. There are a wide variety of uses for a poster, and they are greatly helpful in advertising activities, especially. They also are excellent at communicating most anything that needs to be communicated.
As far as the actual development of the poster, it is widely accepted that the modern type first saw the light of day back in 1870. At that time, it had finally become feasible to not only mass-produce printed products but also to add lithography and color techniques. Mass-producing meant that huge numbers of posters could be spread about while lithography helped to make them appealing to the eye.
Most anybody of a certain age these days can recall all of the many posters that made their way into the public consciousness back in the 1960s. That was a wild decade, full of psychedelia and the artists who took advantage of a decade. This included Andy Warhol and Peter Max, to name just two. Posters also reflected certain art movements, including Art Deco and Art Nouveau.
The ways and means by which posters can be produced are virtually limitless. Since their development in 1870, mass-producing of such posters has helped to push technological improvement in printing processes. Posters as a form of communication have evolved to include a great deal of information on one side while being blank on the other, all the better to help it adhere to any flat surface.
Pinup size posters today and in the past can be printed on just about any type of paper, though the industry prefers to use what is called A3 Standard Silk to do so. This particular paper has been around for quite some time and is still recognized as the best paper for print jobs that focus on poster making. Also, modern software programs are quite capable of producing posters on any home printer.
It is certainly a fact that posters have been around for quite a few decades in their modern form, beginning in 1870. Posters of a sword were also present during the time of William Shakespeare and were used even back then as a way to communicate to large numbers of people. They can be both visually appealing and also are capable of carrying a lot of meaning in terms of context.
